When we were first assigned this project about an ongoing disaster and to create a MEmorial exemplifying the sacrifice, Ulmer’s example of traffic casualties was the bases of my process. Domestic violence is an extremely serious ongoing disaster that affects millions of lives in America on a day to day basis. With the outrageous statistics of one in four woman being victims of domestic violence, societies values and morals have lead to this terrible sacrifice of victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.Legislation has done little to combat the issue and people tend to turn a blind eye to the extremity of the effects of domestic violence. Possibly the most disturbing issue of this ongoing disaster is that this disaster is caused by the ones who claim to most love their victims. This new standard of relationships and “love” for your spouse or child has greatly stemmed from the construed misconception of what it means to be a man in this day in age, as this new era of “rap culture” has infiltrated our younger generations. This endless cycle of abuse is not going to be able to be diffused until society realizes how far we have fallen morally and takes a stand to raise awareness and no long remain silent in these times of sacrifice, a social reform is most important in facing this issue, even before attempting to change legislation on domestic violence. This relates to Ulmer’s idea of Emeragency, electracy and the MEmorial. This Memorial stands as an online memorial for this ongoing disaster in America and the world. I have used different types of coerces and information using multimodal, such as memes, videos, statistics, articles, quotes, and images to connect and show the sacrifice to as many different people. This MEmorial, unlike a typical memorial that is created after the event to remember it, is an ongoing memorial which is far from complete and is set up to continue revealing the patterns behind the sacrifice of this ongoing disaster.
